Rocket Surgery @ Two Rivers Festival & Music Westport

Thanks to the Cove Country Inn and The Westport Arts Council for having us at Music Westport 2015! Rocket Surgery (appearing as a 6 piece) crammed onto a sweaty stage and rocked out to a dancing and sitting crowd (including the nose-bleed patio section).

We’ll be playing at the Two Rivers Festival in Gananoque 8pm, August 22nd, 2015 – wristbands are only $5 for the whole weekend!

Live at The Toucan – Spanish Inquisition

This version of Spanish Inquisition is unique in that the song was still being written at the time and so was a once in a lifetime moment of recording a song that has ended up different for the current album that’s being recorded at North of Princess Studios in Kingston, Ontario. The Toucan residency is ongoing on Monday nights and has allowed the band to develop all sorts of new material and new arrangements as well as twists on classic Rocket Surgery covers.

City of Kingston Presents: Rockin the Square with Reuben de Groot and Sarah Harmer – June 13

Sarah Harmer RIFFLANDIA .jpgCelebrate First Capital Weekend with a free performance by Sarah Harmer featuring special guest Reuben deGroot in Springer Market Square on Friday, June 13 at 8pm. The performance kicks off the 2nd annual Rockin the Square series of concerts to take place this summer–  part of the City of Kingston and Downtown Kingston’s initiatives to animate Springer Market Square for both visitors and residents.

Sarah Harmer possesses one of the most distinctive voices of the Canadian rock and folk music scenes. In just over a decade, she has established herself among the pantheon of legendary female songwriters this country has produced, her name spoken in the same breath as Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Sylvia Tyson and Kate & Anna McGarrigle.

Sarah Harmer’s latest release, oh little fire, is receiving accolades around the globe with 4 star reviews from the London Sunday Times to Winnipeg Free Press to The Washington Post and everywhere in between.  Her solo debut, 2000′s “You Were Here”, was called the best debut of the year by Time magazine and Rolling Stone celebrated the CD’s “dozen killer songs.”  Sarah received a Juno award for 2005’s All Of Our Names and her release I’m a Mountain was nominated for the inaugural Polaris Music Prize.

RuebendeGroot_final 020Reuben deGroot’s blend of jazz, alt-country, and folk surrounding a core of rock n’ roll is known for pulling the audience onto the dance floor. Rocket Surgery, his latest album release, is no exception.

Rocket Surgery sees deGroot wearing his love for music from the 1970’s on his sleeve while delivering his most sonically rich and versatile album yet. Like Ben Folds and Dr. Dog, deGroot’s songwriting nods to another era, yet the apparent influence of folks like Jackson Browne and Don Henley never overpower deGroot’s own unique voice.

Other Springer Market Square programming will occur throughout the summer including a second Rockin’ The Square concert scheduled for August 1st with details to be released at the Sarah Harmer concert.

This Rockin’ the Square performance is sponsored by our media partner, HITS 104.3. Rockin’ the Square is free and will take place rain or shine. For more information please visit

Getting Naked with Megan Hamilton

We are super excited to announce that Rueben has been asked to participate in Kingston’s first Naked Songs Wednesday February 12 at The Mansion (doors 7:30 – show 8pm-10pm).

Local artist Megan Hamilton hosts the first of what she is hoping will become a regular event in Kingston, having Rueben join Kim Harris from Halifax and Jon McLurg on stage. Rueben and his band pride themselves on never really knowing where a jam will take them. Songwriting is another story. The premise behind Naked Songs is to present the songwriter’s material in its most raw form so that you can focus on the words. Often, production values play such a key role in a song that it’s easy to lose the poetry or the value of the words.

Storytelling and discourse about the writing process between the artists is encouraged, as is audience participation and questions. All four artists will take turns through the course of the evening. You can read more about it here. Facebook event here.
